Origins
Who would’ve known that a background in aerospace engineering would lead me to BRIMĀ?
It all began with countless late-night sessions in my small Seattle apartment. You know those nights where you find yourself lost in thought, where your awareness of time fades away, and all that’s left is you and the problem... That was me for months on end, obsessing over headwear construction. Technical fabrics, stitching patterns, colorways, I was racking my brain over all of it! I wanted to make something new, something multi-functional, something… better.
Like many of us who take pride in our hair care, I found myself constantly compromising between style, function, and performance when it came to durags. Not to mention, they clung to my head for dear life and usually lost. Whether they would slightly unravel or completely fall off, keeping my head secured during workouts, soccer games, or throughout the night was always a foolish gamble.
I couldn’t put up with it any longer, so I took matters into my own hands. With my love for problem-solving and my passion for design engineering, I devised a "Concept of a Plan." I wanted to create a durag that honored my African heritage while embracing the modern technology of today’s headwear and enhancing its performance.
From there, BRIMĀ was born! A bridge between my African roots and the innovative spirit that drives me as an engineer.
As a proud native of Gambia, BRIMĀ is named after my great-great-grandfather, Brima Mbenga, a visionary advisor to leaders in the 19th-century Senegambia region. Inspired by his legacy, each colorway name represents a story around the magical people, places, and things across the continent of Africa. The motherland makes up the roots of BRIMĀ.
Since our launch in 2024, we’ve been reimagining what athleisure headwear can be because we believe that your hair, regardless of size, texture, or time of day, deserves to stay protected throughout all activities.
