During a State Visit to the United Kingdom in 1973, the Head of the Federal Military Government of Nigeria ‘presented’ Queen Elizabeth II a Benin Bronze head of a king (oba). The head, dating back to around 1650, would have been placed on a shrine in the palace of the Benin king. It was originally sold by an officer from the 'British Punitive Expedition of 1897'.
